Environmental Protection Policy

Undeniably environment sustainability is the most vital concept in today’s world: the utmost challenge lies on how to build an economy, which will be able to support itself perpetually. The question of how to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs posts significant environmental, social, economic and corporate challenges.

Environmental Protection is our outmost ethical responsibility, our strategic priority and an integral part of our operations and future.

Vanguard and strong supporter of this philosophy has been Captain Panagiotis Tsakos who, in support of late George P.Livanos’ vision, co-founded HELMEPA, the Hellenic Marine Environmant Protection Association. This bequest has been continued by Captain Tsakos’ s children, Nikolas  & Maria, who have been participating in HELMEPA's Board of Directors for numerous years. It should also be noted that during his presidency in Helmepa Nikolas Tsakos created Intermepa, the international organization for spreading the idea of marine environment protection worldwide. Later he supported the inception of other MEPAs, such as PHILMEPA in the Philippines and URUMEPA in Uruguay.

The Tsakos Group is committed and dedicated towards the implementation of an efficient risk management strategy, through the protection of the environment. In line with this strong commitment, the Group has established and implemented an Environmental Management System throughout the organization. This Environmental Management System was developed on a wide range of safety procedures and their reinforcement through tests and drills, thus attaining an efficient risk management strategy. The Group directs all efforts and expertise towards creating added value for maritime safety by closely implementing industry initiatives such as EU’s greenhouse gas reduction commitment and Clean Power for transport with alternative fuel strategies. Furthermore, the Group has established procedures to manage and monitor those aspects in accordance with ISO 14001:2004.

The Tsakos Group through the development and enforcement of the Environment Management System, is committed to:

  • Compliance with relevant environmental legislation, regulations and other requirements.
  • Providing adequate resources for the achievement and persistent enforcement of the set objectives and targets.
  • Establish safeguards against all identified environmental risks.
  • Providing appropriate and continuous training to all personnel, onboard and ashore, whose work may create a significant impact upon the environment.
  • Develop and implement an efficient waste (residue) management policy through the best attainable minimization and management of waste, residues and emissions, which are produced by ongoing operations. Tangible savings are achieved through energy efficiency and waste reduction.
  • Continual improvement of the overall environmental performance and continual renewal and update of the targets for environmental performance beyond the framework of applicable statutory requirements.
